Netrakona Pouroshaba (Town of Netrakona) consists of 9 wards and 33 mahallas. It is a municipal town with an area of 21.02 km². Netrakona Pouroshaba was established in 1887 & Ist chairmen of Pourashaba Elahi Newas Khan (1876–1926). The town has a population of 86,541; male 51.22%, female 48.78%. The density of population is 3,951 per km². Literacy rate among the town people is 54.2%.
The town consists of the two main roads, named Boro bazaar and Choto bazaar that run parallel to each other. At Boro bazaar, there are many clothes stores, business centers, restaurants, financial institutions etc. At Choto bazaar, which is actually the bigger road of the two, one can find a vegetable and fruit wholesale market, jewelers, as well as stationary shops. Furthermore, there are two internet cafés next to the Bata shoe store. In the middle piece of this big road, one can find the Sylhet bakery. At the western end of Choto bazaar, there are some wielding shops and plenty of bookshops. At choto bazaar, there are also big stores (i.e. Singer) where modern equipment such as freezer and television are available. Besides this, the major political parties have got their office at this road. In between Boro bazaar and Choto bazaar, there are shops as well, that sell kitchenware, clothes and shoes. At both ends of boro bazaar, which is actually a mall, there is a genuine bazaar with fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and meat. Terri bazaar is also an important place, which is connected with Choto bazaar and Boro bazaar. From Tari bazar, a main road extends as Station road, where the Police station, Railway station and Netrakona Govt. College are situated. To the west of Choto bazaar, the court road runs towards the Magra river and Mukta para bridge, which is an landmark. Along the court road, where the old court, main (big) mosque, public library, Netrakona Municipality etc are situated. All the administrative buildings (DC office, SP office, Judge court) are situated on the other side of Mukter para bridge, on the way to Madanpur.
